About Coton & Hamblins

YOUR LOCAL OPTICIANS IN THE BOROUGH OF GREENWHICH

Coton & Hamblin Optometrists is owned by Optometrist Jo Cashell.  Jo took over both practices in September 2008.

During this time, the practices have continued to evolve, embracing advances in technology and equipment for eye care and eye wear.  Jo is partial to a new gadget and is always looking for ways to improve eye care and educate patients about their vision and eye health.

Jo qualified in 2003 and as well as running the practices is also a clinical lead for the MECS services – helping to shape eye care services and links between community eye care and the local hospital eye departments.

Within the practices, Jo runs the specialist dry eye clinics and also the Night Lenses part of Myopia Management.  She also has additional professional certificates in Glaucoma and Medical Retina.

As a mum to 3 young children, she is passionate about children’s vision and eye health.  She is always looking to learn more and keep up to date with new research and developments in all areas of eye care and vision.

Her worst optician joke is that she could literally bore you to tears about dry eyes!

COTON & HAMBLIN HISTORY

Originally founded on Wellington Street, Woolwich in 1904 by Theodore Hamblin.  Hamblin was an inventor and spectacle maker with many of his inventions on display at the National History Museum.

The Coton brothers became part of the practice’s history and eventually took over from Hamblin and the practice became known as Coton & Hamblin.  The Coton brothers left the practice to their employee Stan Packman whose daughter Margaret took over the business and then purchased what was Bank’s Opticians in Blackheath Standard.

Sadly, Margaret passed away suddenly in 2007.  Jo bought the business in 2008 and took on the existing staff and has built on the legacy of one of the oldest, established opticians in London.
